Newtown Rotary Club hosted a picnic at Crossing Community Church. All the Ukrainian refugees registered to the Council Rock School district were invited to attend with their families and enjoy a day of good food and fellowship along with Crossing Church members of Ukrainian descent. Around 50 guests dined on American favorites, burgers and hot dogs, with all the fixings.
After speaking with the families, it became clear that the need is still great, with many families wanting to remain in the US, learn English, and find employment to build a better life for their families.
The Newtown Rotary is still collecting gift cards to help these families buy basic supplies, food, and shop for school. Gift cards should be $25 each, and places like Target or Walmart are ideal. Gift cards can be dropped off at Countryside Framing, Newtown Hardware House, or Newtown Presbyterian Church during business hours. You can also message us with any questions.
This event was sponsored by Newtown Rotary Club in conjunction with Crossing Community Church. The burgers and hot dogs were provided by the Newtown Rotary Club and Joseph’s Premier Caterers provided assorted sides and salads. Thanks to Rotarian Paul Salvatore, Events Chair, and his wife Debbie, who works for the school district, for identifying the needs of the refugees.
Youth Exchange is back in person after two years in the virtual world. Eight district outbound students have left and eight inbound students have arrived. Recently, the first of three days of orientation for the students at camp Conrad Weiser were held. Amazing how kids who have never met can get along so well, so quickly. Thanks to all the committee members, host families, and clubs for helping to support this fantastic program. Come meet the exchange students at the Purple Pinkie walk on October 15. Sign up today.
The Metric Century Bike Ride on October 8th was for avid bikers able to ride 62 miles (100 kms). This was an out and back ride on a combination of rail trail and roads which took approximately six hours to complete.
October 8th riders are also participating in activities on Saturday, October 15.
Allentown Rotary has joined with Bethany Christian Service to adopt a refugee family that was just brought to Allentown a few months ago. The family includes a mother, three daughters, and two sons. The children are already attending the AllentownSchool District Newcomer Academy, which serves a culturally and linguistically diverse population of students from around the world. The children are adapting to life in Allentown and are doing well in school.
The Allentown Club is providing some direct financial support for some basic needs and club members having been providing in-person help, including translating services and driving the family to shopping, school, and medical appointments.
The family members are not accustomed to cold weather and will be in for a shock when it arrives. They are already minding temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s, so Club members are also planning for their winter needs.
If anyone would like to help this family, CVS, Target and Kohl's gift cards would be especially helpful.

West Reading-Wyomissing and Conrad Weiser Rotary Clubs support STOP THE BLEED, a national awareness campaign and call to action launched by the Department of Homeland Security. The goal of STOP THE BLEED is to promote grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before the professional emergency responders arrive.
A joint District Grant by West Reading-Wyomissing and Conrad Weiser Rotary Clubs purchased ‘Stop the Bleed Kits’ for Wilson, Wyomissing, and Conrad Weiser School Districts along with four Libraries in Berks County. Rotarians joined with Tower Health Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator to conduct training and practice sessions before delivering the kits. This community project aligns with our disease prevention and treatment by providing kits in case of an incident. By training educators and community members we also support our basic education and literacy focus.
Research has shown that bystanders, with little or no medical training, can become heroic lifesavers. Improving public awareness about how to stop severe bleeding and expanding personal and public access to Bleeding Control Kits can be the difference between life and death for an injured person. We hope they never need to use these kits. For more information check out this American College of Surgeons website!
#WRWRotary recently participated in the West Reading Fall Fest on September 17th and issued both a Media Alert in advance of the event and a follow-up News Release. Past President Dave Shoemaker visited Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy recently. Teacher (and Norristown Area High School football coach) Joe Milligan and his class gave Dave a demonstration of their new robotics gear. This gear acquisition was funded by a Rotary grant which Dave had written while he served as Club President. The matching grant was jointly funded by the Rotary Club of Norristown and Rotary District 7430. Here in the lab, students are learning about virtual reality and practical life applications. #peopleofaction
