District Governor Message - October 2021
October is Community and Economic Development month for Rotary International and District 7430. Rotary has targeted poverty by setting a goal to create productive employment opportunities. Our District programs feature Economic and Community Development projects on poverty, job creation, entrepreneurialism, and the quality of place in our community.

Our Project Showcase featured service of two Clubs. Bethlehem Morning Star Rotary Club shared its “Game of Rent” about affordable housing and the West Reading-Wyomissing Club shared its distribution of 500 saplings to help provide a quality of place. Showcase Tuesday featured Matthew Kane sharing LaunchRALEIGH to train successful entrepreneurs who otherwise would have limited access to financial and business resources. We recorded many of these programs for you and they are available on the District 7430 YouTube Channel.

District 7430 recently enjoyed two successful events:  Stock-the-Box to benefit ShelterBox USA and the Yvette Palmer Purple Pinkie Race to Zero and Octoberfest to support PolioPlus. There is still time to give to these programs. October 24th is World Polio Day.

Our District Action Plan calls for quarterly updates on District goals. Here are some first quarter updates that do not include recent donations:

  1. Foundation: Annual Fund $54,144 ($200,000 goal); PolioPlus Fund $14,370 ($50,000 goal)
  2. Membership: 1,719 members down from 1,727 (1,749 goal)
  3. Learning: 3 Showcase Tuesdays (monthly goal) and 3 Project Showcases (monthly goal);

Rotarians say, “Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Please work with community organizations so that your economic and community development projects can have their greatest impact!

The Foundation’s Annual Fund pays for local and international grant projects that improve lives close to home and around the world. Your contributions help us promote peace, improve people’s health, provide quality education, respond to disasters, and protect the environment.

In 2020-21, we accomplished more than ever:

  • Rotarians gave more than $139 million to the Annual Fund.
  • The Foundation awarded more than 2,000 global grants.

Race to Zero Races to Success
The Race to Zero was back as an in-person event this year! Combined with an Oktoberfest afternoon celebraton, this year's Purple Pinkie 5k Run, 1k Fun Walk or 10k Bike Race has raised over $35K and we're still counting! New location, new course and More Fun! Over 70 Rotarians and guests participated in our annual Race to Zero this year with 5k runners, walkers and even bicyclists. After their exertion, many of the athletes and their guests had a wonderful time with our first-ever Oktoberfest—filled with libations, great food and lots of dancing.

Thanks to Allentown West, Lehigh Valley Passport and Emmaus Rotary Clubs (and to all the volunteers who worked that day) for putting together a successful Race to Zero and Octoberfest. Special thanks to John Scott, Herb Klotz, Carol Ferguson and the Committee for all their time and efforts!
International Service Committee
International Service committee members are available to work with clubs and identify resources to develop international projects and design global grants of higher quality and greater scale. There are experts on the committee who are experienced in project planning, the areas of focus, and Rotary grants for assistance with projects and grants. The committee is also planning to hold an international service project opportunity available to all Rotarians once the pandemic permits.

If you have questions about initiating an international project, contact Herb Klotz, chair of the District's International Service Committee.
