What Students Say about the Four Way Test Speech Contest

From: Richard Wang, 2010-11 District Contest 1st Place, Central Bucks High School South, Warrington, Pa.:

I want to sincerely thank Rotary for giving me the opportunity to participate in the Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest. The experience has helped me learn about the community around me and grow to become a better person. It's really changed my view on life.

For starters, it introduced me to the world of public speaking. Prior to my involvement in the contest, I'd had little previous experience speaking in front of public audiences. The 4-Way Speech Contest was the perfect forum for me to find my voice and get involved. My experience in the 4-Way Speech Contest really helped me to develop my passion for public speaking and gain the confidence to pursue my goals.

Also, during the course of the competition, I got to meet some of the most prominent, but also friendliest and most humble members of Pennsylvania. My family and I were all invited to dinner and a luncheon by local Rotary Clubs. The members were all so nice and we were honored to hear about their entertaining stories and share in the Rotary members' passion for community. It was definitely an experience I'll never forget.

Most importantly, I learned to incorporate Rotarian values into my everyday life. In the process of writing my speech, I not only had to memorize the 4-Way Test, but also learn to apply it to various situations. Now it's become second-nature to ask myself the four questions-Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?-whenever I face a tough decision. By applying the 4-Way Test, I ensure that the decisions I make may not always be the easy ones, but they will be the right ones. And that's an ability that I know will stay with me forever.

Thank you again for sponsoring the 4-Way Speech Contest and giving me the opportunity to participate. It really means a lot to me. I hope Rotary Clubs will continue to give students this opportunity and I can continue to be involved with Rotary in the future.

For any future students who might be considering participating in the contest, I say go for it! The Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest is the perfect opportunity to learn public speaking. At the same time, you'll meet a lot of great people and learn Rotarian values that I've found to be invaluable. Besides it's really a lot of fun!

Sincerely,

Richard Wang

From: Rosalie Cawley, 2010-11 District Contest 1st Runner-Up, Emmaus High School, Emmaus, Pa.:

Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to compete in the Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest. It was a wonderful, educational experience for me.

I truly appreciate all the time and effort that went into organizing, judging and preparing for the competitions. The luncheon at Bear Creek was especially incredible. I had such a great time participating in the competition, thanks to all the hard work of everyone in the Rotary organization.

The competition helped me grow as a person in so many ways. I now feel a great deal more comfortable speaking in public, which I know will be an important skill as I move on to Lehigh University and the workforce. Speaking in front of so many people pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and I am more confident and capable as a person.

I will continue to encourage my fellow Interact members to participate in the contest next year. I truly appreciate the chance to enjoy and learn from this experience and I hope it continues for years to come.

Sincerely,

 Rosalie Cawley
